This 44,000 ft², two-phase fit-out brought to life Northeastern University's first campus outside North America. Set in Devon House, St Katharine Docks, it won Project of the Year at Mixology 2023.

Brief

A campus built for how the world learns

For this first Northeastern campus in the UK, the university wanted something entirely new. A diverse, inclusive, maximally flexible space that embodied their global approach to experiential learning. And would help a major American university feel at home inside a traditional English building.

Approach

Creating a campus hub

The project began by transforming a large open floor plate into a vibrant environment for learning, collaboration and community. A flexible framework let the space adapt to a wide range of academic and social activities.

Bringing identity to the space

We introduced a strong visual language throughout to create a distinctive sense of place. Carefully integrated graphics, finishes and architectural details reinforced the university's identity and created a more engaging experience for students and staff.

Designed for collaboration

The completed environment provides a variety of settings for learning, social interaction and informal collaboration. By creating spaces that encourage connection and knowledge sharing, the design supports a more dynamic, engaging student experience.

Features

A bespoke staircase

The campus’s centrepiece, this feature staircase is framed by biophilia and flows into a curved seating area. This then links directly into the bleacher seating of the main presentation area.

Learning on the bleachers

A specialist joinery piece that creates height and drama in the presentation zone. Flexible and tiered, it provides a setting for lectures, presentations and collaborative sessions that embodies Northeastern's commitment to experiential learning.

Switch into a whole new space

Sliding and folding glass walls throughout the campus can open up or close down in moments. So staff and students have the flexibility to reconfigure every space to suit whatever kind of learning is happening that day.

Award-winning design

This space was awarded Project of the Year: Public Sector & Cultural Interiors at Mixology 2023. Recognition for a campus that set a new standard for flexible, inclusive educational design in the heart of London.

Details

Biophilia, natural materials and warm, inviting tones create a campus that feels welcoming to students from every background. It’s a palette designed to put international learners at ease from day one.

This was our third major project with Berenberg, one of the world’s oldest investment banks. The 24,000 ft² seventh-floor fit-out consolidated teams from two floors in the same building into one of the largest investment research floors in the City. And created a landmark multi-use hub at its heart.
