Northeastern University's London staff needed to relocate. This 10,936 ft² fit-out at Marble Quay provided a sophisticated, future-ready workplace for them. It has close links with Devon House, their previous base, while carving out an identity all of its own.

Brief

A grown-up home for a fast-growing team

As the university’s Devon House campus expanded, staff needed to move out to free up space for students. The brief was to create a workplace that felt connected to Devon House in spirit, but with a more refined atmosphere suited to the pace of a rapidly growing team.

Approach

Unlocking the potential

The project began by stripping the space back to reveal the building's inherent character and opportunities. Retaining key architectural features set a strong foundation for a workplace that feels distinctive, authentic and connected to its surroundings.

Creating a welcoming destination

Hospitality-inspired design principles shaped the employee experience. We introduced thoughtfully designed communal spaces to encourage interaction, create a sense of belonging and offer destinations people genuinely enjoy spending time in.

Supporting community and connection

The completed environment brings people together through a variety of collaborative and social settings. By creating spaces that support both planned and spontaneous interactions, the workplace fosters a stronger sense of community while enhancing the day-to-day experience of students and staff.

Features

Accessible to all

A DDA-compliant stair lift ensures the building is fully accessible to all staff. A practical addition that reflects Northeastern's commitment to creating inclusive spaces across their London campus.

A variety of work settings

Open-plan desking, collaboration zones, meeting rooms and quiet nooks sit alongside one another. Giving a diverse staff team the range of settings they need to do their best work, whatever the day holds.

Space to break out and be social

Dedicated breakout and social areas give the team somewhere to step away from their desks, connect informally and recharge. An important counterbalance in a busy and growing workplace.

Fully branded, inside and out

New external signage and internal graphics clearly establish Marble Quay as part of the Northeastern London campus. It’s visible from the street and coherent with the wider brand across all campus locations.

Details

Warm tones echo the palette established at Devon House. It’s familiar enough to feel connected to the wider campus, but elegant enough to suit the quieter, more focused atmosphere of a staff workplace.

This was our third major project with Berenberg, one of the world’s oldest investment banks. The 24,000 ft² seventh-floor fit-out consolidated teams from two floors in the same building into one of the largest investment research floors in the City. And created a landmark multi-use hub at its heart.
